Steve Mason takes us to church on our fourth release - two heavenly tunes for soul fans, with a nod to disco and house.

This release gave us a beautiful challenge: how do we categorize this genre-crossing music? That’s the inherent problem with the umbrella term, “rare groove” - it’s more of a feeling than anything else. Best described as “gospel-oriented uplifting funky modern soul,” these two tracks are set to explode onto the current soul scene worldwide.

As the needle drops on Everything's Gonna Be Alright on side A, Steve Mason starts his sermon with some spoken-word: “Don’t worry... everything’s gonna be alright... I’ll pray for ya.” What follows is an affirmation through and through, down to the song’s title itself - a driving groove drops beneath a charming lead vocal and is joined by an angelic choir, delivering the message straight to your soul: “gain confidence in yourself, don’t let yourself down.”

Side B gets even more to the point with There’s a Man Upstairs - a funky spiritual that reminds you that Jesus “will pick you up... turn you around... put your feet back on solid ground.” The message comes wrapped in a bubbling bass-driven groove, making you feel like you’re in church on Sunday morning, receiving the gospel truth. And whether you’re religious or not, you’ll certainly believe in the Gospel according to Steve by the time it’s all over.

Let your spirit be lifted by Steve Mason - an artist whose origins are unknown, but whose inspirations come from Heaven. We proudly present these previously unheard and very special found recordings to you, available for the first time on limited-run vinyl.

Special thanks to Chris Ball for delivering this acetate to the Project.
